When you’re about to head off on an outdoor activity it’s really important that you are fully prepared and equipped. Too many people get into trouble as they haven’t taken basic precautions or preparations for their outdoor activity.

Firstly you should ensure that you are wearing appropriate clothing and footwear for your activity. It’s generally best to wear layers of thinner clothing than one or two think layers. If you’re going walking make sure you are wearing good stout walking shoes or boots. Trainers are not normally appropriate. They may be great for the gym, but less suitable on rugged terrain. Similarly denim jeans are normally inappropriate for most activities. In wet weather they just soak up the rain and will leave you cold and wet!

It’s also worth thinking about any wildlife that you may encounter. Mosquito spray will be a must on some activities and travel in some countries will definitely require you to take malaria tablets. Similarly if you are going trekking in bear country, you should exercise real care. Take care how you store your food and consider taking bear pepper spray with you as a bear deterrent. Bear pepper spray is non-lethal and is more effective than the use of firearms!

If you are camping out make sure that you follow any advice available from local park rangers or authorities. Check the local weather forecasts and ensure that you are ready for all eventualities. Make sure you have adequate food and water supplies and that you have a good map and compass and ideally tell someone the route you plan to follow before you set out.
